Seven Side Hustle Ideas that Could Make You 1000 Ghana Cedis or More a Month as a Tertiary Student

Updated: Mar 16, 2023

Side hustles are a great way to make extra cash as a student. They also offer opportunities for you to test your entrepreneurship skills in a controlled effort and at a low risk. Here are seven ideas for a profitable campus side hustle:

1. Own and run

a photocopy machine business on Campus.

Buy a used photocopier and place in a faculty with a high need for handouts. Pay someone a portion of the profits to run the machine while you go to study. You only need to check in once a week if you choose the right employee

2. Start a photography business

With a used professional camera, you can offer photography services to students. You can schedule sessions on weekends and if you are willing to charge less than standard photographers, you could score a lot more clients.

3. Organize Student events and parties

Granted this is a little more time consuming but with the right connections and advertising, you can make easy cash organizing seminars, awards and parties for a small fee.

4. Start a food and drink business

The trick is to keep it simple. Sell food that is popular- hausa koko, sobolo, jollof rice, or fried yam. Consider partnering with a seller looking to expand. Or create a rush on weekends with a food special… “Waakye Sundays”

5. Set up shop from your hall or hostel room

There are two ways to do this-online and physically from your room. You ll need your room mates to be ok with a physical shop, but you can often get them onboard with freebies or by recruiting them as partners. In a large hostel, you can mark yourself as the go to person for mobile money transactions, water and essentials. An online store may come with a more significant learning curve and a little tech savvy but once you put in the upfront work into setting up systems, it begins to run itself. You ll also get greater reach this way.

6. Start a laundry service.

You ll need one used washer and one used dryer machine. This business also gives you the opportunity to offer delivery/pick up services and to get employee experience hiring someone to run the business. You’ll need to check in regularly

7. Start a delivery service.

Granted the upfront cost for this may be higher but so are the returns! Consider partnering with 2 other business minded students to contribute the capital for a used motorcycle. Partner with other campus businesses to offer delivery services to students and reign in the cash!

8. Organize Events

If you are a social person and have great project management skills, this small business is a great opportunity to make some cash. Events can range from educational lectures by guest speakers students are willing to pay for, workshops or entertainment events. Find your niche.
